FALLON, Nev. (June 7-8) – Last season’s Western Region rookie of the year and a former regional champion were $1,000 feature winners when the Evenson Law Office Ironman Challenge Series opened its nine-race run at Rattlesnake Raceway.
Dustin Hansen, the top IMCA Modified rookie in the Larry Shaw Racing Western Region in 2011, led all but two circuits in collecting first night honors at Fallon. Veteran Aaron Spangler reeled in long-time leader Chase Hansen in taking the checkers on night two.
Dustin Hansen started outside the front row and avoided the first lap accidents that pared the starting field. He gave way briefly to Jake Holland midway through the 30-lapper before regaining the lead for good.
“It meant a lot to me to be able to win this race,” Hansen said. “Jake was right behind me most of the way. We were both in lapped traffic there at the end and I’m glad I was able to hold on.”
Jay Sears, Robert Miller and Malen Gonzales rounded out the top five.
Miller qualified from his “B” feature, improving 13 spots from his original starting position. Wyatt Howard nabbed hard charger honors, advancing 15 places to sixth.
Four cautions and early race carnage gave way to 29 uninterrupted laps of green flag racing at Fallon. Seven cars that started the contest were in the pits before the second lap could be scored.
After battling distributor issues in both his heat race and “B’ feature and failing to make the starting field on Thursday, Spangler scored his first win of the season, and IMCA career 124th, on Friday.
He’d drawn the outside pole and ran in front much of the way before fourth starting Chase Hansen zoomed by.
“Chase showed me the top and it took five or six laps for me to get him back,” said Spangler, three times the top driver in IMCA’s Mountain Region. “He ran a really good race.”
Alex Stanford, Hansen, Wyatt Howard and Dan Lee completed the top five. Howard qualified from his “B” feature and improved 11 positions from his original start.
Spangler is still in a car borrowed from Race Fisher. He’d rolled his own ride on opening night at Millard County Raceway.
